before glaze was gloss
"before glaze was gloss" is an installation that explores how lipstick could be transformed
from a cosmetic product to a ceramic glaze.
twelve people are filmed applying their lipstick
to their lips, and the same lipstick is used to color a ceramic tile, capturing the shape of
their lip prints.
after the tiles are fired in a kiln, the heat causes the pigments and minerals
in the lipstick to react, creating a lasting glaze on the surface of the tiles.
the fired tiles
preserve the original shape of the lips, showing how the material changes through this
process.
this installation draws a connection between the act of applying lipstick and the
transformation of materials.
the ingredients in the lipstick function like unique glaze
recipes, with the kiln’s heat altering them to form a permanent glaze on the ceramic tiles,
turning this temporary act into a lasting one.
12 ceramic tiles , 10 cm x 10 cm
